Scientific Research

To preserve we need to improve our knowledge on the marine and coastal environment and all the other factors influencing sea turtles’ life cycle.

Several scientific studies were developed and others are taking place, to improve our knowledge on the sea turtles of São Tomé. Check our library to find out more.
Recently, with the financial support of BP and the technical support of Projeto TAMAR, 21 satellite transmitters were placed in nesting females of green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), aiming to study the spatial ecology of sea turtles (use of habitats during the internesting periods, migratory routes and feeding areas), and to evaluate if the areas that are being used by sea turtles are correlated with seismic surveys and oil exploitation.
In addition, in partnership with the University of Algarve, we will receive master students on the next years, that will develop their master thesis in topics previously selected by Programa Tatô. In the 2020/2021 nesting season, we will receive a santomean student that will study the nesting habitat preferences of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in São Tomé island.
