Localizado na África Ocidental, São Tomé e Príncipe é um arquipélago com grande diversidade biológica, no qual a fauna e a flora merecem especial atenção, devido ao seu valor ecológico incalculável e o seu potencial de valorização através do ecoturismo.
As tartarugas marinhas são uma das espécies mais emblemáticas para a ilha de São Tomé - cinco das sete espécies existentes no Mundo ocorrem nas águas de São Tomé, e quatro delas procuram as praias santomenses para desovar.
O crescente interesse pela observação de tartarugas marinhas, fez com que o Programa Tatô desenvolvesse atividades turísticas responsáveis e sustentáveis, que permitam assegurar a sustentabilidade financeira do programa de conservação a longo prazo bem como gerar benefícios para as comunidades envolventes. Paralelamente, o Programa Tatô tem vindo a participar na formação de guias nacionais para a promoção de um ecoturismo responsável e a trabalhar com as autoridades governamentais no sentido de melhor regulamentar o turismo de observação da biodiversidade, em particular as tartarugas marinhas.
Assim para quem quer participar, na Ilha de São Tomé é possível:
- Visitar o Museu do Mar e da Pesca Artesanal, na comunidade de Morro Peixe onde poderá encontrar um centro interpretativo, um cercado de incubação e uma loja com produtos artesanais locais;
- Participar em atividades de observação de tartarugas marinhas em parceria com diversos operadores turísticos locais;
- Eco-voluntariado em parceria com a agência de viagens One World.
- Visitar a sede do Programa Tatô e conhecer mais de perto o trabalho da nossa equipa e o grupo produtivo de mulheres que produzem artesanato.
Located in Occidental Africa, São Tomé and Príncipe is an archipelago with great biologic diversity, in which the faun and flora deserve special attention, due to its incalculable ecologic value and its potential of valorization through the ecotourism.
Sea turtles are one of the most emblematic species to São Tomé island - five of the seven species of sea turtles of the World occur in São Tomé waters, and four of them look for santomean beaches to nest.
Due to an increasing interest in sea turtle watching, Programa Tatô started to develop responsible and sustainable touristic activities, which allow to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the conservation program as well as generate benefits for the surrounding communities.
In parallel, Programa Tatô has been participating in the national touristic guides training to promote responsible ecotourism and has been working with the governmental authorities to better regulate the tourism-related with the observation of biodiversity, especially with the sea turtles.
Thus, who wants to participate, in São Tomé island is possible:
- Visit the Museum of the Sea and Artisanal Fishing, in the community of Morro Peixe, where you can find an interpretative center, a hatchery, and a shop with local handcraft products;
- Participate in our sea turtle watching activities, in partnership with several local touristic operators;
- Eco-volunteering in partnership with the travel agency One World;
- Visiting the base of Programa Tatô and find out more about our work, our team, and our productive group of women that create artisanal products.
